Does Club Linux Coffs Harbour have an IRC channel they hang out on, or a mailing list?
Or is there any way to contact a Club Linux Coffs Harbour member?
I am in Armidale, but my hometown is Grafton, and I want to participate in LUG activities where possible.
Thank you,
PS
What about email address lists?

Re: Communication
You can contact me via http://www.clublinux.org.au/contact. I'm not the fastest respondant in the world, though. Anybody else want to volunteer to be the contact point?
We did have an announce-type list for meeting reminders, but that got weighed down with spambots subscribing themselves to the list. We're currently just sending out these reminders from a shell script (how geeky is that?).
We've never had a discussion email list. Does anybody think we should start one? Can anybody recommend a good list manager application? I am so sick of the Mailman interface.
Mailman
I don't mind the old Mailman - does the job, and I don't mind moderating...(currently look after 8 lists). I have looked around in the past and haven't found any other package that is better than Mailman.
I'm like you Matthew - slow on the responses.

Communication
Matthew, I emailed you and Peter about a mailing list. This site gets very little input. Speaking of which, did you see my blog and my further post about setting up a web forum? Discussions have advanced. I'm starting to favour Drupal and Phorum. One dinosaur in the group wants to stick with phpBB but that's so last century. Phorum gives the user a choice of linear and threaded views, can handle scale and is a light user of resources.
Re: Communication
I'm personally not a fan of mailing lists. I subscribe to many of them, Thunderbird neatly files the messages away into sub-folders, and then once every six months I delete them unread. I'd much really have the ability to subscribe to a regular "new content" notification for the site, which seems to me less overwhelming and intrusive than a mailing list. I know this is possible with Drupal, but it's not something I've done with any of my sites in the past. Something we can discuss on Sunday.
Re: being the contact point, Drupal can handle multiple contacts for one or more contact roles via the site-wide contact form, and the actual addresses remain hidden. Sounds like we're way overdue for a little web workshop, so I'm happy to take to a corner of the room with anybody interested at the next meeting. Would be a good opportunity for you to evaluate Drupal for your needs with the OpenOffice.org group, Terry.
What about a google group? (what!?)
Google/Yahoo/etc. Groups
My only misgivings about using these services are:
- your organisation ends up looking like it's endorsing a particular business. There's a lot to like about Google, Yahoo, maybe even MSN - I don't know, but none of them can be said to be as pure as the driven snow.
- you typically get advertising appended to the bottom of every message
- you lack control. We live in paranoid times and online services providers sadly have a track record of capitulating to bullying from corporate lawyers and repressive governments. Having said that, I did get a Google account to check out some of their services, but it's not something I'd like to ask other people to do if I could avoid it.
Whatever you want from these services I'm pretty sure someone in the group could provide an equivalent service.
