Buying a Linux Laptop

My old Dell Inspiron 8500 beast has carked it, so I'm in the market for a new lappy. I'll do my usual humming and hah'ing for a few weeks then eventually by some other boring hunk of plastic and wires. In the meantime would anyone like to entertain me with suggestions of what I should buy? My needs are pretty basic up to a point. 90% of the time I'm in a web browser 9% of the time I'm editing text/code and 0.9% of the time I'm watching Dr. Who, The IT Crowd or some other teev.

That would make things simple except for the other 0.1% of time which I spend editing crappy home movies of the kids pretending to be zombies to send to gran and gramps. So the Asus eeeee thing won't cut it, unfortunately.

I will be running linux but sometimes think it would be nice to be able to run OSX just for the Mac video editing software which sucks the least out of all the packages I've used.

I'll add responses to this topic to let you know how my deranged brain copes with all this decision making. Who knows it might be funny... or sad. No doubt some anthropologist will find this all very interesting sometime in the far distant future, probably whilst dissecting my brain, on a spaceship.

Laptops

Can't help with brands but if you're buying retail, Computerland is worth a visit for good service. He has some Linux experience.

Thanks Terry

I'll be sure to check them out. Meanwhile I am using my little Norhtec MicroClient Snr which sort of reminds me of my old 386 only smaller and more powerful but just as slow in the GUI.

I'm running XFCE under Debian Etch which is going great. I must admit I am hammering the crap out of it. It is currently working as a webserver for TorrentFlux and Wi-fi Dog. Both apps require different databases which adds to the hammering. Still, it is all good reasearch for a time-wasting geek like myself.

Eventually I'd like to can XFCE and set up LIRC to play media files in the terminal, might save some CPU and RAM. Then I just bolt the thing onto the back of a TV/Amp and let the kids try and break it.

I guess that gives me a few weeks to find my replacement machine.
